The Gazette Looks Back To Move Forward

Along with the return of its classic logo, the Postmedia owned newspaper has introduced a new tagline: "There with you then. Here with you now."

Montreal’s iconic English-language newspaper The Gazette is going back in time for a “future-focused” rebranding.

The most notable change at the Postmedia-owned paper is the return of its historic “The Gazette” logo, which had been dropped in 2014 as part of a wider effort to create similar visual identities for each newspaper in the Postmedia Network. The logo introduced at that time included Montreal rather than just "The Gazette
."

Along with the new logo, the paper unveiled a new tagline: “There with you then. Here with you now,” which evokes the paper’s long connection to the city and its people.

“This change is more than symbolic,” said editor Lenie Lucci in a letter to readers, “and serves as a powerful reminder that although the journalism of today is different than in generations past—and even though we tell stories using digital tools that would never have been imaginable in the 18th century—our high standards and promise to seek the truth remain the same.”

The new old look for The Gazette is being promoted through a wide-ranging marketing campaign across the Postmedia network and beyond, handled in-house by Postmedia’s marketing team.

“We’re incredibly proud of the Montreal Gazette’s 245-year legacy of delivering quality, trusted journalism to English speaking Montreal, and the return of The Gazette branding reflects the importance we place on our critical role of informing the public and holding power accountable,” said Duncan Clark, Postmedia's senior vice-president and chief content officer.
