To borrow a famous line from Harrison Ford, getting fast internet ain't like dusting crops. Bell is taking aim at its cable internet rivals with clever new spots from LG2 set in outer space.
The "Light Speed" ad promoting the telco's Pure Fibre internet opens on a sleek spaceship featuring the instantly recognizable Bell colour scheme. It's sitting next to an old bucket of bolts that's clearly intended to represent one of its cable internet rivals.
The Bell ship zooms away, and a crew member on the rival ship explains to his captain that they've escaped "at the speed of light"—in one execution the interior of the ship is Rogers red, and in another it's Videotron yellow.
"Well let's get after them, at the speed of light," the captain responds.
When told they only have "cable speed," the still-confident captain orders it to be engaged. Cut to a shot of the ship still plodding along, and a now-confused captain who wonders if cable speed is at least cheaper: "Not really," responds a crew member.
A French-language version of the spot featuring different actors debuted during Radio-Canada's annual New Year's Eve show Bye Bye 2023, running through Jan. 2.
Bell is also running another space-themed spot created by Leo Burnett called "Intelligent Life," in which a human abandons his plans to join an alien in a world characterized by love and happiness because they only have so-so 5G. The spot ends with the alien enjoying the better speeds of 5G.
